From Middle English companye ("a team; companionship"), from Old French compaignie ("companionship") (Modern French: compagnie), possibly from Late Latin, but this word is not attested. Old French compaignie is equivalent to Old French compaignon (Modern French: compagnon) + -ie. More at companion.
