From Middle English propertee, properte, propirte, proprete, borrowed from Anglo-Norman and Old French propreté, proprieté, from Latin proprietas ("a peculiarity, one's peculiar nature or quality, right or fact of possession, property"), from proprius. Equivalent to proper + -ty. propriety.
