Circa 17th century, perhaps of North Germanic origin, related to Norwegian nugge, nyggje, Icelandic nugga, from the root of Proto-Germanic *hnōjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *kneh₂- (compare Ancient Greek κνάω, source of English acnestis).
