Noun

Origin

  • Borrowed from Greek χαλλούμι, borrowed from Cypriot Arabic/Egyptian Arabic حلوم, borrowed from Coptic ϩⲁⲗⲱⲙ ("cheese") (Sahidic), ⲁⲗⲱⲙ (Bohairic), itself in turn probably a borrowing from Semitic, though in manuscripts and ostraca from 2nd century Roman Egypt, Demotic Egyptian ḥlm is also attested with the meaning "cheese".
