From Middle English bunting, bountyng, buntynge (also as Middle English buntyle), of uncertain origin. Possibly a reference to speckled plumage, from an unrecorded Middle English *bunt akin to Dutch bont, Middle Low German bunt, bont, German bunt -ing.
