From Middle English adjectif, adjective, from Old French adjectif, from Latin adiectivus, from adiciō + -īvus, from ad- + iaciō. The Latin word adiectivus in turn was a calque of Ancient Greek ἐπιθετικόν, a derivative of the compound verb ἐπιτίθημι, from which also comes epithet.
