• Borrowed from German Marzipan, from Italian marzapane, Venetian marzapane. Believed to be, with influence from pane, derived from Arabic مَرْطَبَان which comes from the name of a Burmese port known for its spice exports, Martaban, now called in Burmese မုတ္ထမ.
