From Late Middle English gosling, goselyng, alteration (due to Middle English goos, gose) of earlier gesling, of North Germanic origin, from Old Norse gæsling, géslingr, from gás + -lingr, equivalent to goose + -ling. Cognate with Danish gæsling, Swedish gässling. Compare also Low German gossel, gössel, German Gänslein.
