From Middle English brydgrome, bridegome, from Old English brȳdguma, from Proto-Germanic *brūdigumô; equivalent to Old English brȳd + guma. Altered by folk etymology to end with groom, as guma was obsolete. Compare Saterland Frisian Brüüdicham, Dutch bruidegom, German Bräutigam, Norwegian and Danish brudgom.
