Cognate with Scots aicorn, Saterland Frisian Äkkene, Dutch aker, Danish agern, Low German ecker; Welsh eirin ("plums"), Breton irin ("plum"), Irish airne ("sloe"), Lithuanian úoga, Russian я́года ("berry").
