Andalusia

Meaning

Proper Noun

Origin

  • From the Arabic الْأَنْدَلُس, الْأَنْدُلُس, from Vulgar Latin *Vandalicia, or possibly from Vandalic *Wandalitia ("land of the Vandals") (or *Vandalitia) of the same Latin source, from Proto-Germanic *wandilaz. Alternatively, Halm (1989) suggests it may derive from (unattested) Gothic *𐌻𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌿𐍄𐍃, from 𐌻𐌰𐌽𐌳 + 𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌿𐍄𐍃.
