From Middle English ȝarowe, yarowe, yarwe, from Old English ġearwe, from Proto-West Germanic *garwu ("yarrow, yarrow-like herbs"). Cognate with Dutch gerw and German Schafgarbe.
Origin unknown. Perhaps imitative of the bird's cry; compare yaffle, hewhole.
