• Mid-16th century. Original meaning was somewhat idiomatic, meaning "to walk using snowshoes." Probably of Scandinavian origin, compare Icelandic þrūga ("snowshoe"), Norwegian truga ("snowshoe") and dialectal Swedish trudja.
