  • From Middle English stalworth, stal-worth, from Old English stǣlwierþe, probably from staþol (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-) or stǣl + -wierþe (probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wert-). Displaced by stalwart, which forms a doublet. Compare staddle and worth.
