Origin

  • From earlier sloggorne, slughorne, slughorn, borrowed from Scottish Gaelic sluagh-ghairm, from Old Irish slúag, slóg + gairm. Slóg is derived from Proto-Celtic *slougos, from Proto-Indo-European *slowgʰos, *slowgos; and gairm from Proto-Celtic *garman-, *garrman-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵeh₂r-. The English word is cognate with Latin garriō, Old English caru.
