First attested in the 1610s–1620s. From an Algonquian language; compare Abenaki sôgmô, sôgemô; Penobscot sagema ("chief"); Mi'kmaq saqamaw ("chief"). Ultimately the same Proto-Algonquian root *sa·kima·wa as sachem.
