Meaning

Noun

Origin

  • Borrowed from Latin rē, ablative of rēs.
  • The first syllable of Latin resono ("to resound"), the first word of the second line of the medieval hymn Ut queant laxis, from which the solfège syllables were taken because its successive lines started each on the next note of the scale. Doublet of resound and resonate.
