Origin
From Ancient Greek πεῖ, ultimately from Proto-Semitic *pay- ("mouth"). pe. Its mathematical use apparently stems from its use as the first letter in περιφέρεια and was first cited in 1706 in the Synopsis Palmariorum Matheseos by William Jones.
