Borrowed from Ancient Greek μισόθεος ("hating the gods"), from μίσος + θεός. The Greek compound is found in Aeschylus (Agamemnon 1090; compare dystheism). The English word appears as a nonce-coinage, used by T. De Quincey in 1846.
