Either borrowed from French menhir, or from its etymon Breton maen-hir, from maen (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂s) + hir (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *seh₁-). The English word is cognate with Cornish mênhere, Welsh maen hir.
