From Middle English loyne, from Old French loigne, from Latin lumbus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ-. Cognate with Old English lendenu, Dutch lende, German Lende, Swedish länd, Proto-Slavic *lędvьja (Russian ля́двея). See also lend#Etymology_2.
