Origin

  • Coined in 1971 by Boston Globe editor Bill Cardoso. Of Unknown origin; OED proposes Italian gonzo ("dolt") and/or Spanish ganso ("dolt, goose"). The etymology supplied by Cardoso himself (French gonze) is spurious.
