Origin
From Middle English gobben, gabben, of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant of Middle English globben, related to Middle English gulpen; or alternatively related to French gober, from Irish and/or Scottish Gaelic gob ("beak, bill"), from Proto-Celtic *gobbos. See also gobbet.
