Cognate with Scots drichtin, drichtine, and with Old Frisian drochten ("lord"), Old Saxon drohtin, Old High German truhtin, Middle High German truhten, trohten (dialectal German Trechtin, Trechtein), Danish drot, Swedish drott, Icelandic dróttinn ("hero, ruler, lord"), Finnish ruhtinas ("sovereign prince").
