  • Since early 1800's commonly used by Pennsylvania Dutch (Penslfawnisch Deitsch); possibly a borrowing from dialectal German dutzig, also dützig, ditzig, from dialectal dutzen. Compare German verdutzt and regional Dötsche. Unlikely, an alteration of dizzy, of American origin.
