From Latin dithyrambus, from Ancient Greek δῑθύραμβος. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, it is of non-Indo-European origin (Pre-Greek ), related to θρίαμβος and ἴαμβος. Brandenstein also compares Sanskrit अङ्ग ("member").
