  • Borrowed from French carotide or New Latin carōtides, from Ancient Greek κᾰρωτῐ́δες ("carotid arteries"), from κᾰρόω + -τῐ́δες, from the fact that the carotid artery supplies blood to the brain, and interruption of this flow causes loss of consciousness.
