  • From Middle English bresten, bersten, from Old English berstan, from Proto-Germanic *brestaną (compare West Frisian boarste, Dutch barsten, Swedish brista), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰres- ("to burst, break, crack, split, separate") (compare Irish bris ("to break")), enlargement of *bʰreHi-.
