Borrowed from French brume, from Latin brūma ("winter solstice; winter; winter cold"). Brūma is derived from brevima, brevissima, the superlative of brevis (the winter solstice being the shortest day of the year), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mréǵʰus ("brief, short").
