Borrowed from French auberge. The term is attested in the fifteenth century as auberge, a loan from a term attested in eleventh century Old Occitan alberga ("camp, hut"), derived from albergar. The term originated in Frankish *harjabergu, composed of the elements *harjaz (compare German Heer) and *berganÄ…, whence German bergen. harbour.
