From Late Latin acnestis, from Koine Greek ἄκνηστις ("spine"), from κνῆστις, or from ἀ- + -κναίειν (only attested in compounds), or from incorrect segmentation of κατὰ κνῆστιν (see Homer, Odyssey 10.161), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kneh₂-.
