• From the Middle English Tile, Tyle, from the Old English Tȳle, Thīla, Tīle (variants of Þȳle) and the Medieval Latin Tīle, from the Classical Latin Thūlē, Thȳlē, from the Ancient Greek Θούλη, Θῡ́λη, of unknown origin.
