Shuadit

Meaning

Proper Noun

  • An extinct Hebrew-script variant of Provençal used by Jews in France, also called Judeo-Provençal or Judeo-Comtadine.

Origin

  • Coined by Zosa Szajkowski, who believed it to be derived from Hebrew יְהוּדִית ("Jewish [language]"), although this has shown to be spurious. The word that he based it on was in fact from Old Occitan chuadit, a manuscript variant of chuadi in a poem written by a non-Jew, and is of unclear meaning.
