A port city in Crimea (peninsula), internationally recognized as part of Ukraine (country) but de facto in Russia (country). It is the base of the Black Sea Fleet.
Late 18th century. From Ukrainian Севасто́поль and Russian Севасто́поль, from Ancient Greek Σεβαστόπολις from σεβαστός + πόλις, probably after Empress (=Augusta) Catherine II of Russia.
