Proper Noun

Origin

  • Borrowing from Latin Sardinia and Ancient Greek Σαρδώ, which in turn derive from a pre-Roman language, *sard, *shard. It is connected by some scholars to the name of the Sherden or Shardana, an ethnic group amongst the Sea Peoples. A Phoenician inscription found in Nora and dated to the 9th century identifies the island as Shardan.
