State in western India which has Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) as its capital.
Origin
From Sanskrit महाराष्ट्र, derived from महा-, combining form of महत् + राष्ट्र, a dynasty that once ruled the area. In Sanskrit, the word राष्ट्र means “nation” or “dominion”.but in persian maharoshtra is mahar+oshtra meaning camel bridle . Other theories indicate that the word "rāṣṭra" in this context derives from रत्त (a corruption of “Rashtrakuta”, a dynasty that once ruled the area), a clan known as राष्ट्रिक (found in some of King Ashoka’s inscriptions) or रथ.
