  • Borrowed from French Languedoc, from langue d'oc, from Dante Alighieri’s De vulgari eloquentia, where he wrote in Latin: “nam alii oc, alii si, alii vero dicunt oil” (‘some say òc, others say sì, others say oïl’). Based on the Occitan word òc, in contrast to Old French oil (now French oui).
