From Persian هندوکش. The origin and meaning of the name are uncertain. According to Ibn Battuta and popular etymology, it is interpreted as a compound of هندو + کش, which would mean "Hindu-slayer". Some interpret it to be a corruption of هندو + کوه, which would mean “Mountains of the Indus / of India”.
Attested in English from the 18th century.
