From Ancient Greek ᾍδης. Possibly Proto-Indo-European *n̥- + *weyd-, meaning "that which is unseen", equivalent to ἀ- + εἴδομαι. Puhvel (1987) argues that it is from *Sm̥weyd-, from *sm̥- + *weyd-, meaning "see-together" or "uniter", equivalent to ἁ- + εἴδομαι, cognate with Russian свида́ние ("see each other"), and partly in Sanskrit संगमनम् जनानां, where *weyd- is replaced with *gem-.
