From Middle Welsh eneit, from Proto-Celtic *anatyo-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁-. Cognate with Gaulish anatia ("souls") attested on the Larzac tablet, see also the modern Welsh anadl, from Proto-Celtic *anatlā. Alternatively, Enid may be derived from Enaid or Enit, meaning “woodlark”.
