  • A variety of Middle Persian, the court language of the late Sassanid period and of classical Persian poetry.

Origin

  • Borrowed from Persian دری, of disputed origin, probably from دربار. The use of the name for the Afghan dialect of Persian in English is a recent development, the language formerly being known as Persian or Afghan Persian to English speakers.
