Dalston

Meaning

Proper Noun

Origin

  • From Middle English Derleston, Dorleston; from Old English Dēorlāf + tūn.
  • Uncertain. Bosworth-Toller identifies the Cumbrian village's name as being from Old English Dægsanstān, known for the Battle of Degsastan, but later scholars believe that the battle happened in an area named Dawstane (whoses name could also phonetically descend from Dægsanstān), in Liddesdale to the northeast of Cumbria.
  • From either one of the above etymologies.
