A group of neurons located in the rostral ventrolateral medulla and ventral respiratory column in mammals. It plays an important role in controlling breathing and responding to hypoxia.

Origin

Named in 1978 by Professor Jack Feldman of UCLA, after a variety of white wine served at a scientific meeting in Hirschhorn, Germany.
