Belize

Meaning

Proper Noun

Origin

  • Borrowed from Spanish Belice (atttested since 1677) as the name of the Belize River, probably from /Mopan Maya beliz ("muddy water"). (An earlier suggestion, that it could be a Spanish pronunciation of the surname of Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, is now considered to be a myth.)
