Meaning

Proper Noun

  • A deity which medieval Christians mistakenly imagined that pagans, the Knights Templar and (sometimes) Muslims worshipped, and which figures into some modern occultist and Satanic religions.

Origin

  • From Medieval Latin Baphometh, from Occitan Bafometz. Probably ultimately a corruption of Arabic مُحَمَّد ("Muhammad") (compare Old Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested. Muhammad, and mammet.
