Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἀττίλα, of uncertain further origin. Usually derived from : Gothic or Gepidic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 + -𐌹𐌻𐌰, "little father". Related to Old English Ætla and Old Norse Atli. Possibly Gothicized Turkic *es, and *t il, *attíl- (< *etsíl < *es tíl) with the meaning "the oceanic, universal ruler". Also Turkic *āt (horse), and *atli.
