• an eastern Sassanian border province in Late Antiquity, corresponding to the Upper Mesopotamia excluding Osrhoene, bordering Adiabene in the east, Armenia in the north and Asuristan in the south

Origin

• Middle Persian, from the Aramaic variant of the name of the Arabs, which, along with various other ethnic groups, constituted the population of the province. Compare Classical Syriac ܒܝܬ ܥܪܒܝܐ and Old Armenian Արուաստան.
