Proper Noun

• A colonial territory owned by France in the 17th and early 18th centuries, spanning over what are now the Maritime provinces of eastern Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) and part of the state of Maine in the USA.
• Acadia National Park, a national park in Maine
• A parish in southern Louisiana settled by Acadian exiles: see Acadia Parish.

Origin

• Two possibilities:
• from Italian Arcadia, from Ancient Greek Ἀρκαδία, a place of rural peace in pastoral poetry
• from Mi'kmaq akadie ("fertile land")
